What Type Of Hide For YOU?

Sunday, 07 June 2009 20:49

Key Factors To Consider

  • Do you photograph wildlife on your own?
  • How much gear do your carry?
  • How long do you plan on spending in the hide?

  • Do you photograph wildlife on your own?

This is a pretty important question to ask yourself before you purchase a wildlife photography hide.  If you prefer to enjoy some quiet time on your own and travel light a one man wildlife photography chair hide might be the best option for you. If you like to go out with a friend you might want to offer to share a hide, if this is the case perhaps a two man hide or moving up to the hub hides (Elite/Pro) photography hides if you require more space for gear and supplies.

How much gear do your carry?

This question can be a major factor over why type of hide you go for.  Some photographers will carry all of their equipment everywhere they go, some will simply take what they want to use for the day.  If you are the type of photographer that will carry as much gear as they can, we would recommend you towards the (hub style) Elite and the Pro photography hides as they offer much more room than the chairs hides.

How long do you plan on spending in the hide?

All the Stealth Gear photography hides are designed to offer you some protection from the elements, however the Elite and Pro wildlife photography hides have tie down ropes to help during stormy weather.  The chair hides are designed to be portable, take it where you want to use it, when your finished put it in the bag and off you go.  The hub hides are designed to be used over longer periods of time, they are not 100% waterproof but will provide protection from the elements.

My question for you is this, I am Wildlife film maker and I tend to carry the minimum of gear just my small camcorder tripod & stool now I am at a loss trying to work out which hide will be right for me as the majority seem to be for photographers & obviously with a camcorder I will need to be able to pan my camcorder to follow the wildlife also weight is another concern.I have thought about a bag hide but I wsa told it would be too fiddly I thought about a one man pop up hide & also the one man chair hide I like the look of the small dome hides but at over 200 quid its expensive, any advice you can give me will be very much appreciated

    Hi Steve
I would recommend you look at the one man chair hide, http://www.stealth-gear.com/pr...-hide.html check the lower images and you can see inside the hide, you will be able to pan with the front window open. One problem with the bag hides is if you move the hide moves as well, they can be ideal for some situations but if you are sitting for hours its hard not to move and if you move there is a good chance the wildlife you are trying to film will notice. The one man chair hides offer limited room inside they are designed to be compact and as you say you dont carry much equipment i think this would be the better option for yourself.
