After completing studies of economics, Bernd Liedtke became a teacher and taught for almost 35 years. His love for the great outdoors formed his character. Thus it was a logical step to become active in the two largest associations concerned with environmental protection. For over ten years he served on the local boards of these organizations. Photography began to fascinate him even as a schoolboy, and the first money he earned he invested in photographic equipment. Nature photography eventually became the center of his interest. In 1986 he gained membership in the Association of German Nature Photographers, for more than 3 years he was a member of the board and since 2008 he has headed a local branch thereof. His goal as concerns nature photography is not that of setting up an archive with an uncountable number of pictures. His desire is to continually improve upon the pictures he has been making over the years of animals and plants in the countryside and landscapes he is most familiar with. For this reason, he is focused on the species to be found at his doorstep in the Rhine Valley. A second location dear to his heart – his second doorstep, so to speak – lies in Scotland. Since 1997 he has been visiting his friends and fellow nature photographers Laurie Campbell and Neil McIntyre, to whom he is his beholden for his strong ties to that country and its natural treasures of animals and plants. His photographs have been successful in national and international competitions. Some of the prizes he has won are: several “Highlights” in the “European Nature Photographer of the Year” - 1st price in the international competition “Glanzlichter 2008” (mammals) - winner in the competition run by Nature’s Best “Backyards 2009” (USA) - and 2010 he got the “Fritz Poelking Award” in the competition “Glanzlichter”.
